Working on parenting with Love & Logic
So, our son didn't have the best day yesterday. It wasn't terrible, but our standards have come up a bit, you know? We discussed having an indoor picnic for dinner, since we were supposed to have rain. So, we laid out a blanket and got the house ready. Then we saw the folder.................Through his tears, he exclaimed that he didn't want to sit at the table while the rest of the family got to sit on the floor. However, when given the option to either eat quietly or have his fit upstairs, he calmed quickly. The more important part, though, was a statement he made when he found out about the picnic he wouldn't be sharing in. He said that I should have informed him of the reward up front, so he could know to try harder. I disagree, as following directions is an expectation, not an exception. I told him that rewards like this are often surprises, and asked him what he could do to earn them.... to which he responded, "follow directions."

I love this. I'm probably too big of a sucker when it comes to the kids and their tears. But I love this idea and it gives me something to think about for sure.
